ZenBuddy
Company description
ZenBuddy was pitched as a mobile mindfulness app specifically designed for children of color, ages 6–12, and their families — built around the idea that most existing kids' mindfulness tools (Headspace for Kids, Calm Kids, and similar apps) don't reflect the cultural backgrounds of a wide range of users, leaving many families feeling disconnected from the content. The app was designed to weave guided meditations, interactive exercises, music, and games rooted in diverse cultural traditions and "ancient wisdom" practices, meant to be used by children and their families together rather than by kids alone. The company, doing business as MoDigital, LLC, went through the Emerging Industries cohort of Startup Texas, the accelerator sponsored by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) in partnership with UTRGV's Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center (ECC), with its August 2024 application.
Founder Sonya Ramsey brings a distinctive mix of experience to the project: she runs MoDigital as a digital marketing consultancy serving women coaches, consultants, and speakers, is a newly certified Pilates instructor, and spent more than 15 years as a museum docent at the Columbus Museum of Art, where she led tours and lectures designed to be inclusive and engaging for culturally diverse audiences. She founded the ZenBuddy project in May 2024 as a solo, full-time founder, having previously completed the Kauffman FastTrac Business Program before applying to Startup Texas, and planned to begin a six-month mindfulness training program that fall to further develop her ability to teach mindfulness specifically to children. MoDigital's current website features the mindfulness-for-families project under the name "Rooted in Calm: Mindfulness for Families of Color," rather than "ZenBuddy."
