Ollie Oats

Company description

Ollie Oats makes an all-natural overnight oats mix packaged in a resealable, eco-friendly rice paper pouch — customers pour in their milk of choice, refrigerate, and eat straight out of the pouch the next morning, no bowl or cleanup required. The Olmito-based company was part of the Quality of Life Ventures cohort of Startup Texas, the accelerator and pitch competition sponsored by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) in partnership with UTRGV's Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center (ECC) and taught at the eBridge Center.

Olivette Pena Fisher started Ollie Oats in January 2023, shortly after finishing treatment for breast cancer. A Brownsville native who spent 34 years as a teacher and school administrator, she'd been making overnight oats for her own family for years and, encouraged by her son, decided to turn it into a small business as she looked for a healthier routine and a new sense of purpose during recovery. Two months after the idea came together, she had a product ready to sell, and Ollie Oats has stayed a family effort since — her husband, children, and mother all pitch in to get the pouches to market each week.

Ollie Oats was featured in Edible Rio Grande Valley's Spring 2024 "Meet the People at the Market" story, where Pena Fisher talked about why she still sells in person at the Brownsville Farmers Market rather than only online: she enjoys meeting and talking to people after decades spent working with the public as an educator.
