STX Metal Trades

Company description

STX Metal Trades is a Brownsville, Texas metal trade school founded by Jason Medina that offers NCCER-based training and assessments for people entering the skilled trades or building on the skills they already have, with programs covering pipefitting, welding, and OSHA safety standards. Its tagline sums up the mission: "Real training that leads to real jobs." STX Metal Trades took part in Startup Texas, the accelerator and pitch competition sponsored by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) in partnership with UTRGV's Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center (ECC) and taught at the eBridge Center, competing as part of the 2024 Quality of Life Ventures Spring Cohort.

Medina started his own career as a pipefitter in 2014. As he built a reputation as a highly sought-after tradesman, family and friends encouraged him to put his experience and industry connections to use training and placing others in the trades. STX Metal Trades ran its first training program in December 2023 and has since helped a growing number of Brownsville men and women move into skilled pipefitting careers.

The company has picked up local press along the way. BCIC's Border & Sea series ran a two-part feature on STX Metal Trades in June 2024 (part one, part two), in which Medina called the company "Brownsville-born" and pointed to the city's growth and rising demand for skilled workers as reasons for building the business there. Greater Brownsville EDC also featured Medina in a video success story about doing business in Brownsville.
