Cilantro Sauce
Company description
Cilantro Sauce makes a unique cilantro-based condiment, born out of a Treviño family recipe, sold through food and grocery retailers, farmers markets, and local restaurants across Texas. The Brownsville-manufactured product was described in the founders' own 2021 application as "a unique and innovative creation that had no market" — a genuinely original condiment rather than a variation on an existing sauce category. The company applied to the very first Startup Texas Pitch Summit in January 2021, sponsored by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC).
Husband-and-wife founders Corando and Marigel Treviño brought Cilantro Sauce to the public in September/October 2017, financing the early business in part with a $17,800 SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). Ahead of their Startup Texas application, the couple took part in "From Recipe to Reality," a food-entrepreneur roundtable hosted by UTRGV's Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center, UTRGV's Small Business Development Center, and the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center — where Corando Treviño said the workshop's comparisons with other successful food businesses helped answer many of their early questions. By the time of the 2021 application, the business had two employees and was targeting a $200,000 raise (through self-funding, private investment, and SBA channels) to scale manufacturing in Brownsville.
