Company description
Embedded is developing a comfortable, non-invasive patient monitoring system aimed at nursing homes, hospitals, and households — originally built around RFID tags, the system now centers on a sensitized bedsheet that detects a patient's presence or absence in bed, tracks their movement and body position in real time, and sends alerts to caretakers when a patient nears the edge of the bed, has left it, or hasn't moved in an extended period. The goal is to address three linked problems in patient care: fall risk, wandering associated with dementia and Alzheimer's, and bedsore formation from prolonged immobility — all compounded by a broader nursing shortage that limits how closely staff can monitor patients directly. The company went through the 2023 Startup Texas SBIR/STTR Innovation Competition, a program run by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) in partnership with UTRGV's Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center (ECC) and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES).
Founder William Brown is a UTRGV mechanical engineering graduate now pursuing an MBA with a specialization in entrepreneurship. He launched Embedded in 2022 after completing Expanding Frontiers' Entrepreneur in Residence Apprenticeship (EIRA) Program in 2021 — a South Texas nonprofit accelerator — where he now also works as Assistant Coordinator, helping train each new cohort of entrepreneurs. Brown won the UTRGV Business Plan Competition in Weslaco and was named a 2022 Future Texas Business Legend by the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation, an honor that came with $15,000 toward Embedded and access to a network of business owners and mentors. UTRGV's Center for Innovation & Commercialization director Laurie Simmons, who worked with him during the competition, called his entrepreneurial curiosity "evident" and said he was "the type of student UTRGV should encourage and nurture."
